Hola,
My name is Craig Jull and I will be moving to Uruguay in January 2010.
Originally I am from New Zealand but lived in the USA for 13 years, and have been in Guatemala for the last year.
I own an online Spanish school http://www.121speech.com that I plan to manage from Uruguay.
Soon as I move here I will be searching for a house/apartment to live, so if anyone knows of a place (must be able to connect to good Internet) , please let me know.
Gracias
Craig

Hello Everyone,

People who know me like to call me Kal, I suppose to save themselves the effort it requires to
pronounce it correctly. I am originally from India and have lived in the USA in California for 30 years.
No regrets at all. However, there comes a time when a change in enviroment can only help in
a gentler and placid life style that can be highly conducive to health and happiness.

I have been contempleting South American after a few visits to Brazil and Argentina. Argentina
more favorably to Brazil, but the hectic lifestyle and the higher cost is a detterent.
I came across this site and it has reinforced my desire to make Uruguay
as a place to call home.

I am still in the last vestiges of my research phase before buying the ticket.
It will be wonderful to receive advice from established residents and will be accepted
with a lot of gratitude.

Arthur from South Africa

Postby ArthurWright on Sat Jan 23, 2010 7:46 pm

Hi all.
I currently reside in South Africa and am looking at emmigrating to Uruguay. I have experience in the computer Industry (had my own small business selling and fixing them for about 11 years) and office administration.

I am looking either to find a job in either of these fields or alternatively at setting up the same sort of computer business again in Uruguay. I am prepared to work in almost any field. My main concern is that I need to care of my mother (69 this year) who suffers from Epilepsy and is on chronic medication. Therefore, I would need work with a fairly reasonable income so that I can afford to care for both of us.

I am a fairly hard worker and am always prepared to earn my salary.

Last but not least, I am an Old Apostolic and would like to know if there any other people of this same faith anywhere in Uruguay.

If I do emigrate, it will have to be a final move with a definite view to settling permanently. Can anyone recommend any particular area that might be more recommended? I will need cheaper accomodation initially until I get set up and established. After that I hope to be able to either buy or build.

All comments and correspondence is welcome. Both positive and Negative.

Many Thanks

I have already been posting somewhat, but thought it might be fun to introduce myself as I feel like my demographic is a bit different from the standard here. I could be wrong though!

I'm 23, and am currently living in Uruguay with family, practicing Spanish (a language I love... my mother is Venezuelan but never really taught me Spanish, sadly), and enjoying a year off before starting as an investment banker (studied computer science on a more theoretical level and economics with a specialization in finance). I would love to come back to Uruguay eventually (thinking 4 to 5 years) because it really is a special place and I love it over the other cities I've lived in (NY, Philadelphia, Boston, Dallas, we'll see how it compares to San Francisco), but am not quite sure that my skills lends themselves easily to obtaining work here OR doing work via the web (if anyone has any recommendations I'm all ears!). We'll see though. It's a special country. Who knows where life will lead me.

Hello from Kansas City, Missouri

Postby lynnmckin on Tue Apr 20, 2010 11:20 am

Hi, Everyone! My name is Lynnette. My husband, Matt, and I are very interested in moving to Uruguay... so we're in the process of researching all we need to know about living there. We will be on the ground in late October to explore the interior of Uruguay. We'd like to start a self-sustaining farm/ranch. Already, I have found much interesting information in the forum.

I come from a very rural farming and ranching community in Texas (I speak some Spanish but not certainly the dialect spoken there) and Matt is originally from a rural area in Indiana. We are both professionals living in Kansas City, Missouri and ready to ditch the city rat race and the stress that goes along with it. We are hoping that our upbringing will serve us well in Uruguay.

I look forward to reading all the interesting information in the forum. The information about well drilling was very interesting as my parents and grandparents ran a well drilling business for many years. My husband and I have had some interesting discussions about the control of the tucu-tucu also... I must say the pictures were a nice touch... We are wondering if they taste anything at all like chicken. Sounds like we should add various sizes of Have-A-Heart traps to our list.....

Hopefully, we'll make some friends along the way.

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience and information,
Lynnette & Matt

Welcome to the board.

I’ve spent many a week on business in Overland Park and downtown Kansas City, MO. It’s a great area – I’m amazed you would be willing to give up that type of lifestyle for an unknown area like Uruguay.

Hello everyone,

First and foremost, I thank Eddie for his kind attention to my little problem - getting into this forum. I spent like three weeks trying this and that, and then I noticed Eddie's offer to help with forum issues. In less than 24 hours he had me installed! Again, thank you! I was beginning to think one had to have connections or something to get in here.

OK, what mainly draws me to Uruguay is its description of being European. Here in the States we still have many Europeans, of course, and my wife and I are two of them, but in many of our areas being European means there is a target on your back (and probably on your front, too). In our once fabulous country, what little remains of cultural Europe can be found in the museum-like presentations of certain little towns here and there. When I see these spectacles, I get the same melancholy feeling I get when I see a huge and once proud ship anchor high and dry on someone's lawn, completely out of its element and thus incapable of doing what it was built for.

Howdy!

My name is Scott, and I'm a computer programmer from Houston, Texas. Lately I've been thinking that it's time to get out into the rest of the world, and Uruguay looks like a potentially good spot.
