Thank you both! I'll have a look at the Ibis.

Syd, thank you so much for the offer. I will PM you once I've got my feet on the ground and my head stops swimming - I will have had two night-flights by the time I arrive... :(

This blog is very helpful, Im always looking for info about best bilingual schools, best towns to live in, I dont want my husband and kids to miss their life in the states that much so I keep looking for nice yet affordable places to live and things to do in my beautiful Uruguay. later, liliana :D

OK, I thought I had posted already...but it seems I did something wrong :S

Hello everyone!I'm Enzo, I'm from Florida (UY), but I have lived in Paraguay, the Canary Islands, Spain, Norway and now the UK.
My wife and I will be heading to Uruguay for christmas (she is from Norway, and it will be her first time there)

I'm looking forwards to some "zapallitos rellenos", since those are very hard to find in the UK!

I work for a college here in England, so I will be contacting people involved in language teaching and higher education with some agent agreement propossals, so if any you know someone that already works with higher education you might want to drop me a line.

Later!

Enzo

Welcome to the board, Enzo. I guess you already noticed that there’s another Enzo who is a member.

:-)

She can read – she just can’t post, and it won’t flag the ones that she’s already read so she doesn’t look again.

Hello to all. My name is Doug Heller and I've lived here in South America for the last four years. First for an extended period in Argentina, and more recently here in the Pocitos neighborhood of Montevideo in Uruguay.

I thoroughly enjoy the ex-pat life. Ever since I first went to Spain at age 17 (30 years ago) I've enjoyed the sense that time is relative, a day in a foreign culture is worth 2 (or more) in the cacooned-life back home. When people ask if I love 'traveling'...I have to say "yes, and no". What I truly love is working my way into a place, learning the language, facing the challenges of transacting daily life abroad...becoming comfortable but aware of the differences, some or most of which never go away. That, I love. Airports and tour buses and flitting over a beach resort (they are all alike, aren't they?)...less so.

I enjoy meeting and conversing with other ex-pats. I only recently discovered the Southron site and Thursday night gatherings, so I look forward to meeting more people here. I also want to meet Uruguayans. That's one reason I set up a language exchange meeting twice a month here in Montevideo. (See: Learning Spanish and/or Events Boards for more info.) Practicing English/Spanish is a good excuse for ex-pats and locals to come together.

Thanks to David and the whole Southron crew for providing a vehicle for people to get in touch and stay connected.

Hello!

Postby LTCW on Tue Dec 22, 2009 11:35 pm

Hi,
Just found the Sociedad Southron board while looking for information on Uruguay. My wife and I are in the dreaming/planning mode about where to live after retirement. As you all know, information (in English) on Uruguay is hard to find. Few travel guides and not much in the form of English language fiction must mean that Uruguay is a "secret"! So, my interest is peaked... I stopped by the Uruguayan Embassy last week while in DC, and received a few pamphlets, though nothing of real help. I was also surprised to find that while the receptionist spoke very good English, she was from Paraguay!

Thanks for allowing me access to your lives, and hopefully I'll have some intelligent questions to ask in the future!

Louis
