I was recently in the U.S. and did a tour of the large furniture retailers and of many specialty furniture stores and "to the trade only" showrooms in New York.
What I can say is that at after a certain pricepoint and for certain quality items, Uruguay can be a bargain.

For example, we carry items from suppliers that can be found in ABC Carpets and Home at a much higher mark-up. I checked out Crate & Barrell and found that items that are virtually the same as pieces that I carry have a similar price but with significant MDF or veneer components, rather than fully made in solid wood like ours. Basically, whenever you leave behind the big box retailers and step into a more specialty or boutique environment or a more quality item, prices in the U.S. are double or triple what you can pay here.

I think again, this reflects the reality of Uruguay as a destination in terms of price/value. Anything mass produced, run of the mill, standard, etc. is comparably extremely expensive, and the more upmarket you go, the more the picture improves.

As I have in the past, I suggest anyone shopping for furniture give Punta del Este a try. There is so much on offer (at least 4 districts with lots of furniture shops, to our dismay they keep opening up) and much more to choose from than in Montevideo or even in Buenos Aires, as you have home-grown retailers, plus a few from Montevideo, and others from Brazil and Argentina, and very thriving market for home furnishings.

And yes, I do have a furniture store, but I am not expecting to get a flood of Southron customers overnight, so this is not to be taken as solicitation... :D

Regarding sheets, I buy at Home Collection, on Calle 20 (Punta del Este), and they are OK. Not amazing, but I buy from their sale rack and they're in the $20 to $50 range when on sale. But I also bring from the U.S. every now and then. Towels -- stay away from Arredo towels, they disintegrate from looking at them too hard.

I can tell you that Arrancopelito's store is beautiful. As soon as I can get my renos done and have some sheckles hoarded up I will be swinging by there myself. There are bbbeeeeaauuutiful carpets there about which I dream. Day and night. (I am a disinterested dreamer, btw).

I second that. Visited Arrancopelito's store on my last trip. VERY nice. Looking forward visiting the new store in Punta shopping center.

Apparently unless you're Dr Bosque, in which case the puzzled clerk will ask in a distinctly Uruguasho way, "Why {on earth} do you want a long-handled shovel?" and mutter something discouraging about maybe ordering one.

And your demonstration of digging a hole without bending over double will do little, no doubt, other than encourage his impression of you as eccentric, at best.
